Blink Twice | Review & Score

About: When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. As strange things start to happen, Frida questions her reality.

"Are you having a good time?"

Originally I had no interest in really seeing this movie...ever, but then I kept seeing more and more chatter about it through social media and people saying some praise for it, so I decided to check it out at the theater.

It did not disappoint.

They set the tone off strong with a 'trigger warning' before BLINK TWICE starts. There are definitely some scenes in this movie that may be a bit touchy with some viewers out there. Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum have terrfiic chemistry. This is definitely an acting side to Tatum that we've never seen before, he is really good here.

The film plays off as a 'sister companion' almost to Jordan Peele's smash hit GET OUT. At least that's how I felt through the movie. It does have some "#MeToo" vibes to it in some cases, but the story, characters and twists are too good to kinda overshadow those 'vibes'.

Some of the supporting cast includes Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Simon Rex and Geena Davis. It really is a solid cast overall and everyone played their parts very well. Osment, Slater and Rex are basically comic reliefs in a big way, mostly Slater. All three of those performances are great. It's still pretty crazy seeing Osment all grown up.

Adria Arjona's performance is dynamite. She's a slow build firecracker that adds tremendous support to the story and tone of the film. She's really good. Props to her.

Naomi Ackie's performance is fantastic as well. She plays off everyone so well, especially Tatum and Arjona's characters.

Channing Tatum is truly the standout here, because he goes from a very chill, laid back persona to flat out terrifying in a very nice, slow burn, gonzo-like performance that I've never seen him in before. It was pretty refreshing really. He's so good in this, he's my standout performance here.

All in all, Zoe Kravitz's directorial debut is classy, subtle and ferocious at most times. I honestly can't wait to see what she pulls off next. I'm interested in seeing where she takes her directorial talents down the line. She's got a knack for it already.

There are some formulaic and psychological thriller cliche spots spread out, but it's not too much to stick to the wall and downplay the story at all. I would recommend this one to all of you fellow psychological horror fiends out there. It's a good one.

The third act and finale is really good too.

3.5/5
