Vengeance | Review & Score

About: A writer from New York City attempts to solve the murder of a girl he hooked up with and travels down south to investigate the circumstances of her death and discover what happened to her.

Vengeance recently released onto digital platforms and I was anxious to give it a watch.

What really appealed to me about Vengeance after seeing the trailer was Novak and Kutcher. But, the story was another fascinating aspect for me. I figured it would be pretty woke, from a narrative standpoint, and it does have very little detail of that. But its story is more from the narrative of how we use society in today's idealistic world.

I believe the movie, overall, stands its own ground as a sharp picture of how we use the advantages of what we're able to do with our lives in today's society. Novak captures that with swift, sharp writing and a great character study. He does so without being too nasty and obscure towards one culture or the other.

Ashton Kutcher's performance is one of the very best I've seen from him. Kutcher has some of the sharpest dialogue. Kutcher's character Quinten Sellers doesn't show up often, but when he does, he fucking matters and you're glued to the idea of what happens with him. You don't get that often in film anymore.

Well done.

Novak's performance is very solid as well. He has a knack for subtle comedy, but with this he's taken a hold of the dark comedy route and nails every scene he's in. It's a much different approach to filmmaking for him and it shows he's relishing in it's prize.

Well done.

The movie has a nice flow to it, it's not a slow paced story by any means. It gets to where it needs and desires to be without holding your patience hostage. The Texas setting seems to be always ideal for a nice dark comedy. I don't what it is, but the south has it's way of being fucking harsh and hilarious at the same time. It's quite a balance. I love it.

If you're in for subtle dark comedy, with sharp words and a common ground narrative - and a splash of character development... Vengeance is worth your eyes, ears and brain.
