The Substance (2024)

About: A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.

THE SUBSTANCE was great up until the third act.

I enjoyed the performances of Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley.

The last 30 minutes or so was a big downer, but the lead up to that third act was nothing short of excellent. I liked the artistry behind it all in all. The third act, to me, felt like a cheap gorefest that wasn't really needed. Although, I will say, the reveal (you'll know what I mean if you see it) at the end was pretty fucking wild.

I'm not totally sold on the whole 'body horror' gimmick, but this one is one of the better 'body horror' films in recent time. It takes a lot to make me feel a little 'bleh', this movie did a fine job at getting me to that point a few times. Woof.

One last tid bit to add... the run time could have been a little bit shorter.

If you enjoy body horror, gore, fine acting, wild transitions, Dennis Quaid's munching and Demi Moore, you'll get a good load out of THE SUBSTANCE.
