1917 | Review & Score

About: April 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Sam Mendes crafted something brilliant with 1917. And in doing so, he crafted the best war film since Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan'.

The cinematography, direction, acting, musical score are all top notch and make for one great experience. It's definitely a movie that is worth multiple viewings, in fact, it demands it. I feel like this was Sam Mendes' truly breakout role as director, but he's been around for a minute.

Universal and Mendes hit the nail on the head with 1917, telling a strong story with two strong lead characters. A story about honor, bravery, horror and class. The style of shooting with the slick, long one takes camerawork feels very suited for this type of film. So well done.

Kudos to Mendes, the cast and Universal for telling this story with such grace and class.

SCORE: 5/5
