Civil War | Review & Score

About: A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

"What kind of an American are you?"

I went into CIVIL WAR with some solid hype. Coming out of the theater, I felt a little indifferent.

It's a really good movie, in the sense of having great acting, direction and set pieces. The subject matter and how it was played out, to me, was very... mucky. Some of the dialogue was fair enough to get by without coming off too repetitive, but the great performances overall set that piece of opinion back a bit.

Kirsten Dunst is easily the standout performance, along with a scene stealing performance from her real life husband Jesse Plemmons. The direction from the talented Alex Garland is top notch. The set pieces and tone were good. Other than that, it was a muddled and mucky mess. Some of the pacing was off. It's hard to really put the subject matter its going for into a full length picture and make it fictional without looking like a mushy, repetitive mess.

Garland does a great job at making the characters relatable, but some of the writing is very silly and over-repetitive. At least that's what it came off looking like to me. The finale of the film was another issue for me. It was predictable and came off very one-dimensional. I've seen this kind of ending a lot of times, and portrayed with much more vigor.

All in all, Civil War is a fun enough action/political thriller for those who seek out that type of content. Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemmons were the standout performances. It's fine.
